Take a hike

Hiking is a popular activity in Moab and luckily for families, there are many trails that are suited for all ages and skill levels. You will find accessible trails in both Canyonlands and Arches National Park. Plus, family-friendly trails in Dead Horse State Park make for a great day outing.

Of course, you don’t have to visit a state or National park for your hiking adventures, as there are plenty of hikes in Moab, that is suitable for the entire family. And the best part about these hikes is that there are no entrance fees required and they tend to have fewer crowds.

Visit the Moab Dinosaur Park

Moab once was a hotbed for dinosaurs that used to roam this earth. Many dinosaur remains have been found in the rock formations in the area, making it one of the best places in the country to spot dinosaur tracks and view dinosaur bones and fossils. One of the best ways to see these dinosaur remains and learn about these creatures is at the Moab Dinosaur Park. From an indoor 3D theater to an outdoor trail with dinosaur tracks, there are plenty of ways to learn more about the dinosaurs that once roamed the area.

Visit Dinosaur track sites

Discover dinosaur track sites on your own with a self-guided tour along with one of the several trails near town. Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail is a trail that features bone fragments and impressions, plus vertebrae from a variety of dinosaur pieces. This route also features several historical sites and buildings. A map can be downloaded here.

The Copper Ridge Sauropod Tracksite was discovered in 1989 and showed the first brontosaurus trackway reported in Utah. There are also four theropods of various sizes that can be seen at this tracksite. A map can be downloaded here.

Visit a national park

Arches National Park is a great family park that offers plenty of things to see and do with the entire family. Arches National Park contains the largest concentration of natural sandstone arches in the world with over 2,000 arches dotted around the park. Combined with stunning views, multiple hiking trails, and scenic roads, this park is fun for all ages and is beloved by both adults and children.

While you’re here make sure to check off the most popular sights on your trip such as, Delicate Arch, Balanced Rock, and Landscape Arch.

Canyonlands National Park is by far less crowded but can offer plenty to do and is one of our favorite things to do in Moab with kids. Canyonlands National Park features 337,598 acres of vast and awe-inspiring canyons, mesas, arches, buttes, and towering spires.

Experience all the hiking trails, scenic drives, four-wheel-drive roads, and access to viewing points of the sprawling, vast scenery of this beautiful national park. Make sure to make a stop at some of the most popular sites such as, The Needles, The Maze, or the notorious Island in the Sky, which is a titanic mesa that towers 1500 feet up.

Go rafting

Particularly in the summer, when Moab is hot, rafting is a great activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Most rafting companies in town offer half-day raft trips, perfect for the entire family. There are different sections of the Colorado River that cater to all skill levels, so you can choose something that is a bit calmer or if the entire family is experienced, try for something more challenging.
